Interesting Happenings

Interesting parts of today and the past week:

  • I work at Santa Barbara City College and we are doing the musical Avenue Q. I have been working on headshots (for the last show and this one) and had the fun, yet odd, experience of taking headshots of the puppets. Here is Nicky, a unedited photo, but so fun!

  • One of my youngest flute students is so innovative and cute. We're working on Mary Had A Little Lamb and she started singing new words to it. Our favorite one from today was "Mary Had A Goofy Good" and just watching her and her sister laugh, giggle, and smile made my day :)  I wish I had a picture to represent the cuteness.

Samantha.... Leslie....what?

I went to a great event today and it quite funny at the end, I gave my business card to a man who proceeded thank me.... as "Samantha" and then "Leslie" within about three minutes. :)

I love watching people succeed, I love encouraging people to be the best and I'm glad I can look at the world that way. It's a small music world and I hate to see people be so competitive that they can't realize we're all working to be our best and nothing is really a competition against another person. I always strive to be better than the last time I performed/ auditioned.

One-Way Streets
I live downtown and there are numerous one-way streets. Right by my apartment is an intersection that really doesn't look scary thus making it all the more so. For some reason way too many people think that there is a stop sign on the one-way and I have witnessed way too many accidents. There have been two in the last week and there has been so much damage to vehicles and people!

Equality

I have long debated posting about Gay Marriage but with the upcoming events happening in Washington State, I've decided to go for. I may offend people along the way, but I have decided to be true to myself and realize I could offend people either way: 1) by not saying anything (keeping silent never changes anything, 2) by saying what I believe and offending friends.

And, in an effort to do my best to keep my political views separate from Facebook (I hate it when people post only about their views on politics!), I'm posting here so if people choose, they can read my blog :)

I am proud to say that Washington State is moving into the future:

I truly believe that if we are going to give couples medical benefits through the government for being married, then all couples should be given the same choices. It shouldn't matter if the couples are of the same sex or not, equality is equality and I hope that we can look back on this time the same way we look back at voting rights and segregation. People should not be judged for who they are, what they look like, or their sexual interests.

I hate it when people behind behind the bible as the reason to why people should not be allowed to marry. Many people treated religion as a cafeteria, picking and choosing what they want to believe. While I understand that being "all or nothing"is not normally healthy, there is validity to it. If a book says to do 100 things, and 20 of those things are deemed out-of-date, why not the other 80? Who decides? Why?

The way I see it is people should be treated equally and there were times in the United States, only 50 years ago where the color of a person's skin determined things. If you drive through certain parts of the U.S., they are still treated horribly. Women's role in the work place hasn't always been equal and I've experienced that we still have quite a ways to go in this area.

I believe everyone who wants to marry should be given the choice to, regardless of sexual orientation. There's always discussion when it comes to church vs. government/ state. I hope in twenty years, I can look back at 2008-2012 as a time when change happened, giving equal rights to everyone.

SB

I don;t mind friendly tellers, I really don't. However, if I am in the business line with two simple deposits, please do not stand there, not helping me just to chat. I don't mind a little banter but at least be working!!

The woman at CVS told me today that the obese (he's like 500 pounds) homeless guy in town keeps his money in the folds of his skin....
